Green Star and Australian Building Green House Rating Scheme (ABGR)
The Green building council of Australia has developed a national environmental rating tool for buildings called the ‘Green Star’ rating system. This systems rates various aspects of a building in order to rate the buildings ‘Green’ performance.
Buildings have a significant impact on the environment, consuming 32% of the world's resources, including 12% of its water and up to 40% of its energy. Buildings also produce 40% of waste going to landfill and 40% of air emissions. In Australia, commercial buildings produce 8.8% of the national greenhouse emissions and have a major part to play in meeting Australia's international greenhouse obligations. A commercial building sector baseline study found that office buildings and hospitals were the two largest emitters by building type, causing around 40% of total sectoral emissions.
With this in mind Australia’s buildings can play a major role in the fight against climate change, and following this, environmentally sustainable offices and commercial buildings are becoming more important.
Coolco has been undertaking various ‘Green Star’ projects in conjunction with developer Glenzeil, who is striving to obtain the many benefits from the design and construction of Green Star buildings.
The design, installation, service and maintenance of air conditioning and mechanical ventilation systems in Green Star buildings needs to meet various energy, materials and emissions standards.
This rating system is very important for sustainable development and Coolco will continue to use these guidelines in future projects.
Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management
Coolco has a National Refrigerant Trading Authorisation. This system is aimed at minimizing emissions of harmful ozone depleting and synthetic greenhouse gas refrigerants.
This Authorisation is issued by the Australian Refrigeration Council Ltd and is required for all Air Conditioning Companies.
